KUMON 60TH ANNIVERSARY – PRESS RELEASE

Kumon celebrates 60th anniversary; launches logo to convey passion for the future

Jan 1, 2018, MALAYSIA – Kumon, the after-school enrichment programme that originated from Japan, celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. To commemorate the milestone, Kumon launched a commemorative logo that will be used throughout 2018.

In essence the design of the logo is based on three concepts – global outreach, evolving and deepening of learning and spreading of knowledge.

The globe in the logo symbolises Kumon’s intention of delivering the joy of learning, across generations, to different regions around the globe.

The change of colour from the Kumon Blue to warm colours in the logo shows Kumon’s continuous evolving and deepening people’s learning in colourful and interesting ways. It also represents the rational nature and passion of Kumon Instructors and staff.

The elements extending from the number 60 represents the spreading of knowledge throughout the world.

The Kumon method started in 1954, when the then-mathematics teacher, Toru Kumon, wanted his son, Takeshi Kumon, then in grade 2, to reach high school materials as soon as possible so that he would have time to pursue his other interests. He wrote his own worksheets, and had his son do them as homework every day. Toru Kumon would then mark the worksheets and Takeshi Kumon would have to do the corrections, as well as the new worksheet assigned, the following day. Using this method, Toru Kumon found that his son could study high school materials by the time he was in grade 6.

Toru Kumon wanted more children to benefit from this method and study advance materials. Hence in 1958, Kumon is established in Osaka, Japan. Since then, Kumon have spread to 50 countries around the world with more than 4 million students.

About Kumon Kumon is the world’s leading after-school enrichment programme. Officially incorporated in 1958 in Japan, the Kumon Method was born out of a father’s love for his son. Today, we are located in 50 countries and regions, with more than 4 million students enrolled in over 24,700 Kumon Centres.

By discovering the potential of each child and developing their abilities to the maximum, Kumon aims to foster sound, capable people and thus, contribute to the global community.
