Preparation for School and for Life
I cherish the life skills I have learned and developed
- 4 years old (PK2)
I first stepped inside a Kumon Center at the age of three and a half, and I had been pressing my mom to take me sooner. When I was finally enrolled, I started in Level 7A (Counting Numbers) in Math. The first Kumon worksheets, which had pictures and were in full color, were really fun. I enjoyed these worksheets, and I went through them all quickly. According to my mom, whenever the Center would progress me to a higher level, I would come home hugging the new worksheets with a certificate in hand. I would also exclaim to my mom, “Mama, I am now in Level 6A (Reading Numbers).” I remember that I reached Level B (Addition and Subtraction II) in Math when I was five years, and Level D (Multiplication and Division) when I was six years old.
Now, I am a grade four student doing Level I (Factorization and Quadratic Equations). I am enjoying graphing, factoring, and solving through the quadratic formula, although they are still challenging for me. I can say that Kumon has helped me in school. Doing the calculations I am assigned in school, like adding and subtracting three-digit numbers or simple fractions, come naturally to me. I was also chosen to represent my school in the Metrobank Math Teachers’ Association of the Philippines (MTAP) competition. My school was proud of me and my team since we placed ninth among all schools in Metro Manila. It is not surprising that my teammates are also Kumon students from other Centers.
More important than the help Kumon has given me in school, I cherish the life skills I have learned and developed. I know that work is not always fun. In fact, work is often hard, tiring, and boring. But when I start to see things this way, I remind myself that I have to go on, and I cannot quit. I know that with my Kumon training, I am prepared to take on both academic and life challenges.
